The arctic blast has sent temperatures down to -27 last night. I wonder if my zone 5 plants will survive. Is the micro climate next to the house enough for them to get by? Only spring will reveal the answer.
Let this be a lesson not to push the zones further north. I am sure glad I did not attempt to plant a dogwood tree, and that the butterfly bush is still in its pot and not outside in the ground.

It is always so tempting to try those plants you see blooming in other gardens from a few zones warmer. On a warm fall day, I always feel that this will be a lucky winter, but come January the truth is revealed. I have been pleased with some survivors. For the others that didn't make it, it is a toss up as to whether the weather or the gardener got them first.
